The Best Mullet In America Might Just Be Located in Hays County

Add this one to the Keep Austin Weird category (and the area surrounding the ATX)! A Hays County resident has made it to the Top 25 final round of the 2023 USA Mullet Championship.

Brandon Hernandez placed 3rd in the “most epic hair competition of the year” previously and is back for redemption! In his bio, the Buda resident says his mullet, affectionately called a Texas Tailgate, was born after years of sporting all types of hairstyles from bald fades to braids – but he found himself wanting more. Then, one day, it hit him like the smell of fresh cow patty in the early morning; the Mullet! He first entered the 2022 Mullet champ competition and placed top three mullet in the nation. This year, Hernandez hopes his Texas Tailgate will help him bring the best Mullet trophy home to Central Texas.

The USA Mullet Championship isn’t just a fun quirky event. The competition serves as a fundraiser to support the charity Jared Allen’s Home for Wounded Warriors.

Here’s how the competition works:

  • 1 – Users will vote for their favorite mullet. Each vote counts towards the overall score of the contestant.

  • 2 – Donations will be made to Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors, with each donation made on behalf of the contestant of your choice. The amount of money raised for charity will also contribute to the overall score of the contestant.

  • 3 – The panel of judges will critique each mullet based on length, style, uniqueness, and showmanship. At the end of the contest, the culmination of the three aspects of the contest will determine the winner.

You can learn more and vote for your favorite here through October 13!
