This Central Texas Spot Will Make You Feel Like You’re In New England

The Fall season may be a short one here in Central Texas, but if you look hard enough, you can find it. And gorgeous fall foliage is closer than you think! We’re talking about Lost Maples State Natural Area.

Forget New England, fall colors can be found at Lost Maples State Natural Area. Located three hours from Austin in Vanderpool, Texas, the area is home to a large, isolated stand of Uvalde bigtooth maples known for their spectacular fall colors. Check the park’s Foliage Report before making the trek; colors are generally brightest from mid-October to mid-November.

Book your day pass NOW as the weekends fill up fast. Price is $6 per day, per person, ages 13 and older. Children under the age of 13 are FREE!

Here’s Everything You Can Do at Lost Maples

Explore over 10 miles of trails, including a loop that takes you along the top of a 2,200-foot cliff. Stay on designated trails as the natural area already contains steep and rugged terrain. Do not climb on rocks or hillsides. Bigtooth maples have shallow roots, and you can hurt the trees by walking over their roots.

Choose from 30 campsites with water and electricity or backpack to one of their primitive campsites.

Wet a hook in the Sabinal River or Can Creek. You do not need a fishing license to fish from shore or pier in a state park or natural area.

This area is home to a wide variety of birds, including the endangered golden-cheeked warbler and the recently de-listed black-capped vireo. Download Birds of Lost Maples State Natural Area: A Field Checklist | PDF to learn more.

Note: Cell phone service is not available in the Natural Area.
